Teaching Teenagers
By: María José López
Being a teacher of adolescents is a challenge that requires patience, knowledge and special skills. At this stage of their lives, adolescents are undergoing numerous physical, emotional and social changes, which can generate a certain rebellion, lack of interest in learning and behavioural difficulties. However, being a teacher of adolescents is also a unique opportunity to guide, encourage and reach the heart of these young people in their academic, personal and emotional development.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a adolescent teacher is the possibility of influencing their lives. Many adolescents are looking for their identity and purpose in life, and teachers can become role models and mentors that inspire and encourage them to achieve their goals. Through a good relationship of trust and empathy, teachers can reach the heart of adolescents and contribute to their integral development.
However, getting to the heart of adolescents is not a simple task. It requires a pedagogical approach that fits your needs and realities. Teenagers need to feel that they are heard, that their opinions and experiences are valued and that making mistakes does not deserve to be given up. It is important to provide them with a safe and respectful environment where they can express themselves freely without fear of being judged, and to know how adults recognize our mistakes and ask for forgiveness if action is worthy.
In addition, it is essential for adolescents to establish an emotional connection. Teachers must demonstrate genuine interest in their lives, understand their challenges and difficulties, and provide emotional support when necessary. This will help to strengthen links with students and create a positive learning environment.
Being a teacher of adolescents also means adapting teaching strategies to their needs and preferences. Adolescents have a greater capacity to reason and question things, so it is important to promote critical thinking and debate in the classroom. Providing them with opportunities to express their views and participate actively in learning can increase their motivation and commitment, all of which guide them to argue their ideas, support them and seek solutions.
Finally, celebrating the achievements and progress of adolescents is essential to maintaining their motivation and self-esteem. Recognize and highlight their efforts and successes, both at the academic and personal levels, provide them with the confidence to continue their efforts and overcome themselves.
In conclusion, being a teacher of adolescents implies a special commitment to reach the heart of these young people and help them in their growth process. Through a mixture of empathy, understanding, adaptation and encouragement, teachers can make a significant difference in the lives of adolescents, providing them with the tools and support necessary to achieve their maximum potential. Just getting to the heart of a teenager, he will achieve success in his life.
